What we have once enjoyed we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us.
Helen Keller
Some dogs have other interests like playing fetch or chasing rabbits. But DJ only had one love: me. And all he asked was that we be together 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I did my best to oblige him
We have been in 28 states and driven tens of thousands of miles together. Below is DJ is Asheville, North Carolina. His last trip. For 13 years, DJ and I have been attached at the ankle (he was a short dog!)
As usual, I looked to the writings and wisdom of others to help me make sense of a difficult situation.
The poem below touched my heart, and I thought I’d share it with you, because I know that many of you have also lost a dearly loved pet.
Tribute To A Best Friend
Sunlight streams through window pane
unto a spot on the floor….
then I remember,
it’s where you used to lie,
but now you are no more.
Our feet walk down a hall of carpet,
and muted echoes sound….
then I remember,
It’s where your paws would joyously abound.
A voice is heard along the road,
and up beyond the hill,
then I remember it can’t be yours….
your golden voice is still.
But I’ll take that vacant spot of floor
and empty muted hall
and lay them with the absent voice
and unused dish along the wall.
I’ll wrap these treasured memorials
in a blanket of my love
and keep them for my best friend
until we meet above.
